Headache Organizations and Support

Sometimes you just need to know where you can get some headache support. A number of organizations and resources can help you deal with migraines and headaches in a more meaningful way. Family members and friends can also benefit from what these organizations have to offer.

American Council for Headache Education (ACHE)

ACHE started as an organization providing information to health professionals, but has developed into an educational resource for patients as well. They have information on migraine triggers, headache treatments, headache diaries, and more.

M.A.G.N.U.M.

The Migraine Awareness Group: A National Understanding for Migraineurs is an organization dedicated to providing current and relevant information to those who suffer from migraines. They also are active politically and hope to increase awareness of the life-altering effects of migraine headaches and underscore the fact that migraines are neurologic in origin, not the direct result of stress, depression, or lifestyle.

National Headache Foundation (NHF)

The NHF is dedicated to helping to alleviate the suffering of those with headaches of all types. They provide information to patients, families, and health care professionals. They keep current on headache-related news, and support research in the area of migraines and headaches. They also have a physician locator tool so you can find doctors who treat headaches in your area of the country.

World Health Alliance

This alliance is actually composed of 40 separate organizations from 30 countries, all with the goal to keep the world apprised of research, advances in treatments, and general information on headaches. They recognize that headaches, with their many effects, profoundly impact the socioeconomic success of individuals worldwide.

Migraine Research Foundation (MRF)

The MRF is a nonprofit whose main goal is to raise money to fund innovative research involving migraine headaches. Their site also has a section for migraine sufferers, with treatment information and patient stories, along with links to headache centers and certified headache specialists throughout the United States.

The Brain Matters

The American Academy of Neurology has put together an informational site for migraine sufferers. It discusses how migraines occur, what to do about them, and also has a section for family and friends so they can also learn things they can do to help.

International Headache Society (IHS)

The IHS is an organization based in England with the goal of improving life for those who suffer from headaches. They have a journal, Cephalgia, which is a medical publication dedicated to research regarding headaches. The stated purpose of the IHS is to “advance headache science, education, and management, and promote headache awareness worldwide.”

Migraines and Headaches Forum

Come find support in the About.com forum for migraines and headaches. Learn about effective treatments, share your frustrations and successes, and draw support from those with similar problems. Family members and friends can also learn from the experience of others so they can better help cope with headaches.
