Migraine Prevention

Diagnosing and treating Migraine disease is only part of the picture. Once the diagnosis is made, there are several methods in common use to prevent headache episodes. Prevention is a key element in treating head pain disorders.

Dehydration: What a Pain!
The human body is 65% water. Simply put, dehydration occurs as the result of excessive loss of water from the body, when we lose more water than we take in. Learning to prevent and to recognize dehydration are essential. Don't let dehydration ruin your fun or make you more ill. Remember to take in as much fluid as you're losing each day.
PFO and Migraine: ESCAPE Study Beginning
More clinical trials are beginning to continue investigating the link between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and Migraine. The ESCAPE trial is a controlled study to determine if PFO closures will reduce the frequency of Migraine attacks enough to be a therapy option for patients with Migraine disease.
Frova Shown Effective for Preventing Menstrual Migraine
Endo Pharmaceuticals has released data from the second Phase III study of Frova® prevention of menstrual Migraine. This study corroborates the findings of a prior study published in 2004. With two successful Phase III trials, Endo expects to file with the FDA to seek of Frova® for the prevention of menstrual Migraine.

MIST Trial Results In: 37% Reduction In Migraine Burden
The results are in on the MIST (Migraine Intervention with STARFlex® Technology) study, the British double-blind study designed to evaluate the effect of PFO (patent foramen ovale) closure on Migraine. The MIST results indicated an approximate 37% reduction in Migraine burden (number of headaches multiplied by the length, in hours of headache) in those patients who received a STARFlex® implant.
MIST II Begins: Testing the PFO/Migraine Connection
NMT Medical, Inc. has now initiated enrollment in its PFO/Migraine clinical study in the United States. The study, named MIST II Migraine Intervention with STARFlex® Technology), will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of NMT's proprietary STARFlex® implant technology for the treatment and prevention of Migraine attacks in patients with a patent foramen ovale (PFO).

Botox for Head Pain, Largest Study Yet
The results of the largest study to date regarding Botox and a headache and Migraine preventive are out: Botulinum toxin type A, brand name Botox®, is an effective preventative therapy for headache and Migraine pain in chronic sufferers, according to the largest study performed to date, presented at the 45th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society (AHS).

Coenzyme Q10 as a Migraine Preventive

Another medication can now be added to the growing list of medications shown to be effective for prevention of headaches and Migraine. Namenda (memantine), approved for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia of the alzheimer's type has been shown effective in a small, open-label trial.
