Migraine Education
Learning about Migraine disease is essential to managing it. Understanding the disease lets you live better with it, work better with your doctors, and educate the people around you so there are fewer misunderstandings, fewer people thinking Migraines are "just bad headaches."

Beyond the Pain of Migraine
Studies published this month by the American Academy of Neurology show a decreased quality of life for migraineurs and a link between migraine and depression. Once again, it's shown that a migraine is NOT just a headache.

Study Shows Value of Patient Education for Migraineurs
One of the primary goals established by the WHO is better physician education. Physicians who are well educated in this field often emphasize the importance of educating Migraine patients as well. The results of a study recently published in Headache show the impact of Migraine patient education.

Transformed Migraine Related To Sleep Problems
Although sleep issues have been linked with headaches and Migraine for more than 100 years, information about the types and prevalence of specific sleep problems in adults with transformed Migraine (TM) has been scarce. Now the findings have been published on a study to look at the connection between nonrestorative sleep and TM. The study was conducted at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, led by Dr. Anne Calhoun.

What Is Transformed Migraine?
Transformed Migraine (TM) is Migraine disease which began manifesting in episodic Migraine attacks, increasing in frequency and changing characteristics, and resulting in almost daily less severe headaches punctuated by severe and debilitating Migraine attacks.

Unusually Excitable Brain Nerve Cells at Root of Migraine
It turns out that the dilation of blood vessles formerly thought to cause Migraine is another SYMPTOM. The CAUSE is neurons firing across the brain.

What Is Hemiplegic Migraine?
To understand Hemiplegic Migraine, we have to understand that Migraine attacks are episodic manifestations of a genetic neurological disease. Migraine can present in a variety of ways. Hemiplegic Migraine is a rare form of Migraine disease, made more confusing by there being two variations: Familial Hemiplegic Migraine (FHM) and Sporadic Hemiplegic Migraine (SHM).

What Is Basilar-Type Migraine?
You've probably heard or seen this type of Migraine called Basilar Artery Migraine (BAM). Basilar-Type Migraine is a Migraine that has aura symptoms originating from the brainstem and/or affecting both hemispheres of the brain at the same time, but no motor weakness. It's frightening, caution is needed in diagnosis and medications, but it's not as dangerous as frightening.

PFO: A hole in the heart affecting Migraine?
A major topic of discussion today is that of PFO, 'the hole in the heart' that may contribute to Migraines. Migraineurs are asking their doctors to test them for PFO. Many with PFO want to have it repaired . However, the closure procedure is not being performed on the basis of Migraine disease because it has not yet been proven effective. Trials are underway for more study of PFO and Migraine.

Nausea, Gastric Stasis, and Migraine
Nausea is often a symptom of a Migraine attack. Some have theorized over the years that the nausea might be caused by gastric stasis, delayed emptying of the stomach. There have also been questions about how gastric stasis might affect treating Migraine attacks because it can slow the disintegration and absorption of medications in the stomach. The results of a new study, published in the January, 2006, issue of Headache, shed some light on gastric stasis as it relates to Migraine disease.

What Is Status Migrainous?
Status Migrainous (Migrainousus) is a debilitating Migraine attack lasting for more than 72 hours. If moderate to severe Migraine pain lasts more than 72 hours, with less than a solid four-hour pain-free period, while awake, it should be considered an emergency requiring an office call or a trip to the emergency room.

Anatomy of a Migraine
When many people think “migraine” they think only of the pain of migraine. In reality, a migraine episode consists of far more. The typical migraine episode actually consists of four parts, referred to as phases or components.

Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease
A study and JAMA article, "Migraine as a Risk Factor for Subclinical Brain Lesions," examine the connection between Migraine disease, brain lesions, cerebral infarction (stroke), and the frequency of Migraine attacks. This is information every Migraineur should take seriously, and keep Migraine prevention and early attack abortion seriously.

Triptans: Overview and Profiles
In 1992, the FDA approved the first of a class of medications that many Migraineurs call "miracle drugs." That drug was sumatriptan (Imitrex®, Imigran®), the first triptan. Here are both general information on triptans and detailed profiles of each.

National Menstrual Migraine Coalition Formed
The National Headache Foundation (NHF) has announced the formation of the National Menstrual Migraine Coalition to raise awareness of a distinct, but little known Migraine condition, estimated to affect nearly 13 million women in the U.S. Menstrual Migraines are often severe, long-duration Migraines that have a higher probability of recurrence than other Migraines.

Pseudotumor Cerebri Information
Pseudotumor cerebir, aka ideopathic intracranial hypertension is a condition in which the body produces too much cerebrospinal fluid, resulting in elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure. This can be a trigger for Migriane attacks and other head pain.

Aetna has introduced a Migraine management program to educate patients and ask patients and doctors to work together for better Migraine management. There is some doubt that this is an appropriate role for an insurance company. Is there a conflict of interest or will the program prove to be successful?
