Definition: A narrowing of the arteries due to deposits that have collected in the lining of blood vessels. This can result in decreased blood flow. It plays a major role in myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke. Deposits can consist of cholesterol and fatty deposits, as well as other substances such as calcium, cellular waste products, and cells.
