Question: CAD, pressure headaches... Feeling of balloon popping when sneezing...
Answer:
Full Question:
I have had CAD since 33 y/o (I am 46 now) 2
failed CABGs, 7 stents. I am now suffering from pressure headaches. When I cough
or sneeze the headache feels like a balloon has popped in my head. I am not
asking for a diagnosis. I am seeing a doctor and had a negative Cat Scan. I am
simply wondering if you have heard of any one with CAD having problems with
headaches? It does make sense that if your coronary arteries are narrowing then
other arteries might be narrowing also, therefore if my brain arteries are
narrowing. that would build up pressure, especially with coughs and sneezing. I
guess that could be an uneducated hypnosis. What do you think? Thanks for your
time, Arlene.
Answer:
Dear Arlene;
My guess would be in the direction of altered cerebrospinal fluid pressure, but this is not a diagnosis. CAD is certainly one of many clinical issues that can go along with severe headaches, and I certainly have seen this. I'm not sure that it has to do with the diameter of blood vessels per se, but this can be imaged with MRA. Seek out a headache specialist in your area.
Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
