Question: Migraineur boyfriend passing out. Is this normal with Migraine?
Answer:
Full Question:
My boyfriend has suffered from migraines for
over 25 years. As he has gotten older, he has had fewer occurrences, but more
severe. He does drink alcohol regularly, usually one martini a day 5 days a
week. Last week, he exceeded his usual amount, having 2 and a half drinks over a
two hour period and on a full stomach. Five hours after the first drink, he was
found passed out in the bathroom. I was not able to get him to get up, and had
to call friends for help. He had a terrible migraine until around 4pm the next
day. He vomited twice during the night, something he has not done for about a
year. He has never passed out in this way, but believes that he passes out when
in bed and would be unable to be roused then. Is passing out associated with
migraines? He does not see a doctor for his condition, though I am encouraging
him to do so now. Thank you, C L
Answer:
Dear C L;
Passing out with Migraines can happen, but is not common, and is definitely a reason to see a doctor. I'm going to be very blunt and honest with you as your boyfriends health and possibly even his life is at stake here. He is being very foolish not to be under a doctor's care. Migraines are nothing to mess with. Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. His attacks may continue to be less frequent, but Migraine has no cure. The fact that his attacks are becoming more severe is one more excellent reason for him to see a doctor. Passing out may or may not be associated with his Migraines. Only a doctor who can review his medical history and conduct an examination can tell him if his episodes of passing out are due to Migraine or something else. Please encourage him to see a doctor.
Good luck,
Teri Robert and John Claude Krusz
