Question: Replacement med for Fioricet without caffeine?

Answer:

Full Question:

My Doctor prescribed Fioricet (Butalbital) for tension headaches but before taking any I noticed that it contains caffeine - could you recommend a second effective choice without the caffeine which I am allergic to. Thanks, Ron.

Answer:

Dear Ron;

There are any number of butalbital compounds made without caffeine. These medications have been around long enough that your doctor can simply write a prescription for butalbital and acetaminophen or the brand name Phrenelin.

On the other hand, butalbital compounds aren't necessarily the best choice for treating headaches. Many doctors will no longer prescribe them because of their potential for serious rebound. You may want to read this answer too.

Good luck,
