Question: If son stops taking Vicodin, how long for rebound headaches to stop?
Answer:
Full Question:
Our son was prescribed Vicodin for migraine headaches and has been on that drug for almost a year and now he has rebound headaches. If he stops the Vicodin which is not working for him, when can we expect the rebound headaches to stop.
Answer:
Dear Concerned Parent;
You're asking a question that's virtually impossible to answer. The answer depends on the amount of Vicodin he's been taking and how his body reacts to it. You don't say how old he is. If he's young enough that you still take him for his medical appointments, please take him to see his doctor. If not, please urge him to make an appointment for himself. The question shouldn't be "if" he stops the Vicodin, but "when" he stops it. The rebound headaches will not stop until he does, other pain meds will not work until the rebound is stopped, and preventives can't work when we're in rebound. Additionally, there are risks or organ failure when someone uses some medications for prolonged periods of time.
Good luck,
