Question: Hormonal Migraines... prevention... cost of Imitrex?

Answer:

Full Question:

Two years ago, I started menopause and started getting really bad headache all on one side of my head. My doctors has diagnosed me with hormonal migraines. I get them at least twice a month and they last anywhere from 3 to 4 days. He has prescribed Imitrex, which he gave me samples to try. WOW what a relief the pain was gone within twenty minutes. Here's my problem I can't afford to pay for the pills. A prescription for only 9 is $189.00. I don't have health insurances. (Can't Afford it) The doctors has had me try other medication and none work. Can you tell me ways that I maybe able to pay for these Imitrex or ways I can keep from getting these migraines. I lose at least 6 to 7 days from work. My boss is getting very upset every time I call in sick. I given him a letter from my doctor about his diagnosis. It doesn't seem to help. I would love to not get these migraines all the time. Thank you for any help you can give me. And yes I've ask my doctor and there's nothing he can do. Carol.

Answer:

Dear Carol:

You raise two issues here, preventing the Migraine attacks and covering the cost of the Imitrex.

Some women find that preventive medications help prevent even hormonal Migraines. Since your doctor says there's nothing he can do, if you want to try that option, you'll need to find a good neurologist or a Migraine specialist. The link to our directory of recommended specialists is below.

Regarding the cost of the Imitrex, you can check the guidelines to see if you qualify for GlaxoSmithKline's Patient Assistance Program. Since you don't have insurance, if you meet their income guidelines, you may qualify for free medication from them. Click HERE to go to our directory of information on Rx Assistance Programs.

Good luck,
