Answer:
Full Question:
I have been on Topomax for two years and still get headaches. I take 400mg. haven't lost weight. I have sometimes a headache that will last a week. I take Maxalt it helps but as soon as it wears off the headache returns. Sometimes I have to take two Maxalt in 24 hours. Never do I take more than that. I am looking for something else to try besides Topomax. I have also tried a Beta Blocker. No Good. Help. Margie.
Answer:
Dear Margie;
The fact that you haven't lost weight isn't really a criteria to use in judging the success or failure of Topamax. Weight loss, if it happens, is a side effect. Granted, it's a side effect most people like, but it's still a side effect. However, if after two years, it's not helping your headaches or Migraines, it's time to talk with your doctor about tapering off it and trying something else. If all you've tried so far is Topamax and a beta blocker, you've barely scratched the surface. There are still many, many other possible preventives you can try. Take a look at:
Medications for Headache and Migraine Prevention
For those of us with frequent headaches or Migraine attacks, preventive
medications are often a good option. There are over 100 medications that can
be used and nearly endless combinations of them. The list is ever-evolving,
and will this one will be updated regularly.
If your doctor isn't familiar enough with headaches or Migraine disease (you didn't say which you have) and preventives to work with you to find an effective preventive regimen, seek the care of a good specialist. There's a link to our directory of recommended specialists below.
Good luck,
