Question: Sharp, shooting pains in back of head...
Answer:
Full Question:
I have recently started getting sharp shooting pains in the back of my head running from low down into the centre of my head. They last a couple of seconds but are very painful and have been getting more frequent. I get them at the same spot on both the left and the right of the back of my head. Are these anything to worry about? I don't want to take painkillers, but I am a little concerned that they may be indicative of something more serious. Many thanks, Alison.
Answer:
Dear Alison;
It's really impossible to tell what these headaches are via the Internet. You need to see a doctor who can diagnose you by reviewing your medical history and symptoms and conducting an examination. What you're describing does sound a bit like ice pick headaches, but only your doctor can tell. Here's some information about ice pick headaches:
What Are Ice Pick Headaches?
Ice pick headaches are stabbing, extremely intense headaches that can be
absolutely terrifying. They generally only last between five and 30 seconds.
However, they come out of nowhere, can strike anywhere on the head, literally
feel as if an ice pick is being stuck into your head, then disappear before
you can even figure out what's happening.
Good luck,
