Ask the Clinician

Question: Migraines triggered by hot, sunny days...

Answer:

Dear Jan,

Weather triggers of any kind can be extremely difficult to manage. One thing that might help you is to stick to water and reduce the iced tea. The caffeine and tannins in the tea may not be part of your problem, but they definitely aren't part of any solution. Caffeine can actually contribute to dehydration.

One thing you might do is talk with your doctor about taking Excedrin or Imitrex before activities such as mowing or gardening. It may be that you're also getting some exertional Migraines from the activity combined with the heat. Of course, you can't do that daily, but it might at least give you some days without the worry of a heat or exertion triggered Migraine.

Are your Migraines well controlled otherwise? Many Migraineurs find that once they find a good overall preventive regimen, even the difficult weather triggered Migraines become less frequent. If your regimen leaves something to be desired, this should be considered another motivating factor to work with your doctor to improve it.

We're sorry not to be able to offer you any better suggestions, but just as we can't offer many very helpful suggestions for those whose Migraines are triggered by changes in barometric pressure, yours are equally difficult to avoid.

Good luck,
Teri Robert and John Claude Krusz
