Ask the Clinician

Question: Daily headaches... neck movement aggravates,.. amitriptyline causes impotence...

Answer:

Dear Bobby,

I know you'd like us to be able to give you a quick and simple answer, but there aren't any. Sexual problems are a common side effect of tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline. There are other antidepressants without that side effect that you can discuss with your doctor as a possibility for him to prescribe instead of or in addition to the amitriptyline. Wellbutrin is one to discuss with your doctor.

Without carefully studying your medical history and symptoms and conducting a full exam, it's impossible to guess what the correlation is between moving your neck and the onset of your headaches.

If you're unhappy with your doctor, it's time to take charge of your health, and get a new doctor. If you want to consider a headache specialist, there's a link to our directory of referred doctors at the bottom of this page.

Good luck,
Teri Robert
