Question: Child gets Migraines always between 3 and 7 p.m. Why? What to take?
Answer:
Full Question:
My daughter is 10 years old and has had
migraines for 5 years. She gets them one to two times a month. We have tried
acupuncture, chiropractor treatment, eliminating dairy from her diet,
feverfew.... She has had a MRI to rule out anything in the brain that would be
causing them. We cannot find a food that causes it, and it doesn't always occur
on school days. The only absolutely consistent trend is that they are always
between 3 and 7 PM. What would cause a headache at the same time of day like
that. Is there anything that can be tried to counteract them. We have used
Relpax, Zomig, Maxalt and she still throws up several times with each headache.
Becky.
Answer:
Dear Becky;
Some Migraineurs just have specific times when their Migraines show up. Some are early AM, some PM or some at night. The main issue is that you have an idea of when and can be prepared ahead of the Migraine. That's a huge advantage! If the frequency is high enough, you might want to consider low dose prophylaxis approaches as well as active treatment. Often in kids, metochlopramide can be very useful to reduce the nausea and the migraine.
Good luck,
