Question: Could prednisone be a good migraine preventive?
Answer:
Dear Rick,
Steroids such as prednisone are frequently used to treat Migraines that extend for many days without stopping. It's possible that the prednisone you took for could have made a short-term difference in the frequency of your Migraines. However, steroids should not be taken on an ongoing basis, so taking prednisone for Migraine prevention is not a good option.
There are now seven triptan medications in the family with Imitrex. If Imitrex isn't giving you optimal results, it couldn't hurt to talk with your doctor about trying some of the others. Here's some information:
Triptans: Overview and Profiles
In 1992, the FDA approved the first of a class of medications that many
Migraineurs call "miracle drugs." That drug was sumatriptan (Imitrex®,
Imigran®), the first triptan. Here are both general information on triptans
and detailed profiles of each.
Good luck,
