Question: New preventive treatments for cluster headaches?

Answer:

Full Question:

I have had cluster headaches since I was 14. I am also a female. Calan has worked as a preventive for some years now. But I need a very high dose & my Doctor does not approve. Are there any new preventive treatments now? Trying to make this short & sweet. I don't even like to talk about them, much less write it down. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. Jenny.

Answer:

Dear Jenny;

some of the so-called "anticonvulsants" (neuronal stabilizing agents) have been very helpful with few side effects. But most physicians who aren't headache specialists won't be comfortable with these agents (i.e., Keppra, Depakote). Find a headache expert to talk to. If you need it, there's a link below to our directory of recommended specialists.

Good luck,
Teri Robert and John Claude Krusz
