Question: Exercise induced Migraines when others are controlled?
Answer:
Full Question:
My husband (47 years old) has had migraine attacks for the last twenty years, however they are getting worse. His "normal" migraine attacks have been reduced by taking Epilim (used to control epilepsy - which he doesn't get) twice a day. However he still get migraine attacks which send him to bed for days, make him feel sick and for days after gets flu like symptoms, if he undertakes any form of exercise. For example, washing the car, carrying our 2 year old child, lifting etc. He has been seeing a specialist here in the UK for eighteen months and has had a MRI which showed normal. I have been doing lots of research on the Internet with regard to migraines but can't find anything with regard to exercise induced migraines. Have you come across this before? By the way until the migraines became unbearable my husband was a very fit person. Helen.
Answer:
Dear Helen;
There are indeed exertional Migraines. Talk to your husband's Migraine specialist about his preventive regimen. A closer investigation of the exercise induced Migraines may provide a clue about a change that can be made to your husband's preventive regimen to control these Migraines as well. For example, if his blood pressure rises with exertion, the addition of a medication for blood pressure control may help.
Good luck,
