Question: Increasing Migraines, bad sleep patterns, sleep aid prescribed not working?
Answer:
Full Question:
I have about 7-10 migraines a month, usually
clusters during the end of the month, and a few during the beginning. Something
I get up to 15, although some of my medication seems to have decreased that. I
am on 100mg of Topamax, Inderal 80mg and Imitrex shots. I find this treatment as
somewhat decreased the amount, has decreased the auras for certain and decreased
the amount of acute attacks. My doctor added Zopiclone, a mild sleeping pill, to
help me so, believing that my sleep deprivation is causing these clustering
together migraines. Unfortunately, these pills do not help me sleep all that
well and are causing daily headaches. Some of my migraines have been becoming
worse in intensity and in symptoms (tingling in left side of body-rather than
just hands, and twitching in hip and shoulders). My hearing is going all
strange. Anyway, the idea of getting quality sleep seems like a good one since I
have Fibromyalgia and lack of sleep is a migraine trigger for me. Do you have
any recommendations for a different treatment, since this one is not working? My
doctor explained these extra symptoms to me, which I had in milder form, but I
do not understand why they are getting worse. Nor why I am getting the
occasional migraine not responding at all to my abortives. And I think it is
very important to get control of this new pattern, before it takes control of
me. Nikki.
Answer:
Dear Nikki;
I have about 3000 people on tizanidine for helping engender sleep and to reduce Migrainous and non-Migrainous headaches. I don't know if your physician is familiar with this agent and even if he/she is, their experience may be very slight with it.
Good luck,
