Ask the Clinician

Question: New medication with weight loss side effect?

Answer:

I believe you're referring to Topamax/topiramate. It's a neuronal stabilizing agent (antiseizure drug) that is being used as a Migraine preventive. Medications such as Topamax are very serious medications. Unless you need to change your preventive medication, I would not suggest changing to Topamax just to lose a few pounds. You also need to know that it's a potential side effect. Not everyone who takes it loses weight. Also, the amount of weight lost tends to be proportional to how much you weigh. In the clinical trials of Topamax for Migraine prevention, for those who lost weight, the weight loss tapered off at 2.8% of their original body weight.

Hope this info is helpful,
Teri Robert
