Difference between Hemiplegic Migraine and TIA?

Question: Difference between Hemiplegic Migraine and TIA?

Answer:

Full Question:

I am wondering what the difference is between hemiplegic migraines and trans ischemic attacks? I suffer from hemiplegic migraines, but on two occasions ER doctors and neurologists feel that I had TIA's. I couldn't tell a difference in the different experiences. Thank you for your help. C. Thompson.

Answer:

Dear C.;

Although the symptoms of hemiplegic Migraine and a TIA can be so similar that it's difficult to tell them apart, there is a huge difference. Hemiplegic Migraines are episodes or attacks of Migraine, a genetic neurological disease. The symptoms of a hemiplegic Migraine can be frightening, but are generally not harmful.

A TIA is also called a mini stroke. A TIA occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted. Since there's no way to tell if the symptoms are a TAI or a stroke, emergency care should be sought rather than waiting to see if the symptoms go away. TIA's are often warnings that the person is a risk for a more serious and debilitating stroke, which may be prevented if the warning is heeded and steps are taken to reduce stroke risk factors.

If you ever feel that your Migraines are worse than usual or presenting different symptoms, it's a good idea for you to see your doctor or go to the emergency room right away to be sure that it is a Migraine, not a TIA.

Here's some basic information on TIA:
