Question: Trileptal for Migraine prevention?

Answer:

Full Question:

I have had migraine headaches on and off for the last 20 years. Lately (almost daily) they have been quite bad starting in lower part of my head (in the back almost to my neck) after sleep and moving throughout my head as the day goes on. Some take me out for the day while others just make the day hard to get through. My doctor is prescribing Trileptal starting at 150mg for a week and then moving to 300mg. After reading some on the web this seems to be a drug used for primarily for seizures. What do you think about it being prescribed for headaches? Thank you for your time. Russell.

Answer:

Dear Russell;

Actually, there isn't a single prescription medication that was originally developed for Migraine prevention. All of them were originally developed for other purposes, then found to be helpful for Migraine. Trileptal has been quite effective for some patients.

Good luck,
Teri Robert and John Claude Krusz
