Question: Daughter with Migraine and stroke symptoms?
Answer:
Full Question:
My daughter is 15 years old and was just recently diagnosed with migraines. She woke up with a stabbing shooting pain that only lasted a few minutes in the left side of her temple. She then proceed to become dizzy, loss all visual tracking, have difficulty speaking and loss the use of her left side. All the symptoms of a stroke. We took her to the emergency department and they said she had a migraine and sent us on our way. Within walking approximately 200 yards, her symptoms started all over again. She has no pain from these stabbing pains after the first few seconds/minutes. She was hospitalized and they did every test known to man and still came up with migraines. How can this be? Is this a specific type of migraine that I can research? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Liz.
Answer:
Dear Liz;
I don't know what you mean by "every test known to man". I assume the "usual" tests (ie, MRI, CT, EEG, and lab tests) were all negative. This is often the case and is frustrating. I assume they ruled out items like MS, etc... In your daughter's age group, I might want to know about biochemical items that predispose to clinical conditions like vasculopathy, or blood vessel disorders associated with headaches. I would seek out the advice a headache specialist. If you need it, there's a link below to our directory of recommended specialists.
Good luck,
