Question: Can reduction in caffeine cause Migraines. How much Excedrin is too much?

Answer:

Full Question:

I live in Connecticut and just returned from a 2 week trip throughout Germany where I was drinking coffee every morning. At home I drink coffee maybe half as much. I've now returned for 4 days and have had one cup of coffee since being back. Could that cause the migraines I seem to be getting every other day now being home. I take Excedrin Migraine but, how much is too much? Thanks, Trever.

Answer:

Hello;

We can't diagnose via the Internet, but it's more likely that what you're experiencing are actually rebound headaches, aka medication overuse headaches. Caffeine is a drug, and it's possible that you're experiencing headaches as a result of reducing your caffeine so frequently. Excedrin Migraine is only going to exacerbate the problem because it to can cause rebound headaches if used more than two or three days a week.

Your best bet is to discontinue the Excedrin and give your doctor a call to be sure that what you're experiencing is nothing more than caffeine withdrawal.

Good luck,
