Question: Constant headache or Migraine for 5 years. Denied disability?

Answer:

Full Question:

I am a 31-year-old woman who for the last 5 1/2 years has been suffering from chronic headache and Migraines. I have a constant headache that has never gone away in the 5 1/2 years, I get sharp pains on either side of my head and I get Migraines 3-5 days a week. I have seen many different doctors and specialists and tried many many different meds. Nothing seems to be helping. The pain is going in to my neck and upper back (one specialist described this as the muscles tightening and trying to compensate for the pain in my head) now. I have done different therapies from injections to massage. Nothing seems to be working. I have had many tests done including MRI's, CTs, EEGs and all the test show nothing wrong. I still have the pain and need help trying to control it. The Migraines and constant headache has kept me from working and doing a lot of things I like to do. Social Security doesn't consider Migraines and constant headaches disabling so I have no income and living with different friends. I spend most of my time in bed because it hurts to move my head, sounds bother me and so does light some days. Is there any thing that I am missing that I may be able to try that me and my doctors are missing? Please help, Stacy.

Answer:

Dear Stacy;

You touch on several points here, so let's try to address them all:

With Migraine disease, MRIs, CTs, etc, won't show anything wrong. They're run to rule out other problems.

Migraineurs are indeed being granted Social Security disability benefits. It's important that your doctors are firmly behind you in your application, and some applications are rejected the first time, but Migraineurs are being approved. You might check to see if there's an attorney in your area who takes disability cases on a contingency basis where you pay only after winning your case. Stop by our forum and talk to some of the people there who have applied for disability. There's a link to the forum below.

It's impossible to recommend anything specific via the Internet. That needs to be done by a doctor who has examined you. But there are about 100 medications in use as Migraine preventives and nearly endless combinations of them. Doctors can now find effective preventives for 95-98% of Migraineurs. If possible, getting an appointment with a true Migraine specialist would be your best bet. There's a link below to our directory of recommended specialists.

Good luck,
