Question: 12 year old with constant headache, sore throat, nausea, and dizziness?
Answer: Full Question:
My 12 yr old daughter has been having constant headaches, with a sore throat, nausea and dizziness since August. She hasn't had a day where she was symptom free. Her MRI, ultrasound, blood work all came back negative. Prescribed medications are not working, including her latest -Amitryptiline. She's been on Nasonex to no avail. She just move with me to SC after living in NC for the past 5 yrs with her dad. Her pediatrician's next step is to see a psychiatrist. They suspect adjustment disorder.
Answer:
Dear Concerned Mom;
You pose a difficult question. Certainly, if you feel there's any chance of "adjustment disorder," a psychiatric consultation is in order. On the other hand, you might also want to go ahead and schedule an appointment with a different pediatrician for a second opinion. Sore throat, in the traditional sense, aren't usually a part of head pain disorders. If, however, you mean it more as neck pain such as the muscles of the neck, that could be linked to a head pain disorder, and a visit to a headache and Migraine specialist may well be in order. Good luck,
