Question: Depo Provera increased Migraines. Increase Topamax to offset?

Answer: Full Question:

I have been taking Topamax for migraines (100 mg. daily for the past two months, after titrating up). It was working like a miracle! Then my gynecologist put me on Depo Provera for suspected Endometriosis. Since then I've noticed my migraines returning. Would it be OK to ask my neurologist to increase my dosage of Topamax or, am I already on a high dosage for migraines?

Answer:

Dear Mingraineur;

The goal of any preventive regimen is to reduce the frequency and severity of Migraine while using the lowest possible does of preventive medications. Trigger management is also part of prevention. If Depo Provera is increasing your Migraines, it makes sense to investigate alternatives to it before increasing your dosage of Topamax. Are your gynecologist and neurologist consulting with each other regarding your treatment? They should be.

Good luck,
Teri Robert and John Claude Krusz
