Question: Transformed Migraines... daily Axert, hydrocodone, Phenergan...
Answer:
Full Question:
I had my first migraine at the age of 18; I did not have my second one until I was 25 around the age of 28 I began having them every few months; at the age of 30 I had a migraine so painful it paralyzed me. Since that time my migraine has never went away. I've been to a neurologist, had 2 or 3 MRI's & CT scans. I have taken Zomig, Axert, etc....plus oxycodone & hydrocodone. I just learned from your site that what I am suffering from could be transformed migraines. I currently take 12.5 mg of Axert 2-3 times a day (depending on intensity) and 500 mg of Hydrocodone 4x's a day and Phenergan 2 times a day... this works okay but usually once or twice a month (sometimes a week) I still have to get a Toradol shot & Phenergan shot... or go to my local hospital for Demerol/morphine shots.... is there a better treatment out there that can stop these all together I have been dealing with this for over 4 years every single day.... I rarely get a break and when I do its only for a few hours. The longest I have went without any pain is 6-8 hours (no medication was taken or needed) Is there a particular treatment for the kind of migraine that I have?
Answer:
Dear Sufferer;
The best treatment, in my estimation, would be to seek out a bona fide headache
expert in your area. The hydrocodone/acetaminophen is probably keeping you in
analgesic rebound headaches at this point. There are a lot of potentially useful
prophylaxis treatments, but they, too, require detoxification from your present
daily use of opiates.
Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
