Question: Headaches related to immunizations?
Answer:
Full Question:
Hi, my two year old daughter has been
experiencing episodes of severe momentary head pain. Its always in the same
area and she isnt doing anything when it happens, but she cries hysterical and
tells me her head hurts. Its always in the area, the top right side of her
head. She tells me that water went into her head and it hurts. She gets so
hysterically upset and I can tell she is in agony. It lasts for a few minutes
only. Its been happening for 5 days in a row now, several times a day. I took
her to our doctor, her ears are fine, and she is otherwise a very healthy child.
She did just last week get two immunizations. DPT and MMR. She had no reaction
to them. And these episodes started 3 days after her immunizations. Can you
offer any insight or advice as to where to turn now? I am getting very concerned
and scared. Thank You. Lisa.
Answer:
Dear Lisa;
I feel for your worry about your daughter. Immunizations have been observed to be related to headaches, but I suspect she had DPT/MMR before without their occurrence. If there is a family history of headaches or Migraine disease, then I'd pay more attention to your daughter's situation. Or, ideally, I'd seek out a pediatric neurologist who specializes in kiddie headaches. There's a link below to our directory of recommended specialists.
Good luck,
