Question: Stomach/diet and Migraines? Buzz feeling in stomach...?

Answer:

Full Question:

I want to know if there is a strong relationship between stomach/diet and migraines. I have been having neurological symptoms for some time now, and it often seems to be related to stomach problems. I often wake feeling shaky and a little headachy, with a "buzz" like feeling in my head and body. I also feel very woozy and dizzy. The headache pain gets worse and turns to migraine type pain in all my sinuses, especially around my eyes within a few hours after I eat. I went to ER the other night and had a CT scan, which looked normal, but after taking Tylenol PM and an injection of anti-inflammatory medication, the pain seemed to subside, but not the pressure nor the dizziness (vertigo?). I am wondering if it might have something to do with my stomach because when the headaches and "buzz" feeling happens, my stomach also knots up and the vein or artery serving the region throbs so hard that it can be seen vibrating my clothes. I have heard that migraines in children are experienced in the stomach and that certain foods can cause certain neurological pains to be better or worse, so I'm wondering if it'd be a smarter idea to look at the health of my stomach and the vein or artery that serves it. Thanks, Carly.

Answer:

Dear Carly;

Your questions are excellent but somewhat complicated. There certainly are relationships between diet or stomach ailments and Migraines. I'm not at all sure what the "buzz" you describe is. So-called "sinus" headache are often more likely Migraines or migrainous headache. ER visits are, to my mind, nearly useless for purposes of definitive treatment, but fright will make you go there. I am not at all sure what you are describing by the "knot" over your ?abdomen? It is true that many children experience abdominal Migraines but I don't know how that relates to you. My strongest advice is to seek out the headache specialist in your area and describe what you are experiencing. There's a link below to our directory of recommended specialists.

Good luck,
