Question: Stadol... addiction... Safe dosage?

Answer:

Full Question:

Stadol is my Rx of choice because it is so fast acting and does such a good job of pain masking (my gp's words). My gp sees it as too possibly addictive and will no longer prescribe it as of 4 months ago. To be honest I was addicted to it about 5 years ago, quite by accident but no problem since. I believe that properly controlled it has it's place in my selection of pain relievers. What would a maximum but safe dosage be. Would it be similar to using butalbital / Fiorinal a max of 2-3 times per week? I see a specialist soon and am preparing to present my case. Bob.

Answer:

Dear Bob;

Addictions are about behaviors, NOT about medications! Your GP needs to (re)learn this definition! Fiorinal is a totally different type of treatment, fraught with analgesic-overuse and rebound headache problems. Your headache specialist will hopefully have a way out of the dilemma via an opiate-free approach.

Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
