Question: Triptans: Cause rebound? Lose effectiveness?

Answer:

Full Question:

I have a question concerning triptans. Is it possible to get rebound headaches from using these. If so, at what point (e.g. taking them how often per week) would that occur. Also, over time would the effectiveness of the triptans diminish?

Answer:

Hello;

There have been some controversy and rather a lack of consensus about triptans and rebound, but more and more, the prevalent school of thought is that triptans can cause rebound. Therefore, many doctors are recommending that triptan usage be limited to two or three days per week. Yes, some people do find that after taking a certain triptan over an extended period of time, it seems to be less effective for them. Sometimes, a break from it results it its being as effective as before.

Good luck,
