Question: headaches when I cough, sneeze or bend over to do any kind of work...

Answer:

Full Question:

I am a 47-year-old female and for the last few months I get headaches when I cough, sneeze or bend over to do any kind of work. They throb with my heartbeat. I do not have any other symptoms and do not have a stuffy nose associated with sinus infections or hay fever. Kathy.

Answer:

Dear Kathy;

Your headaches may represent changes in the intracranial fluid pressure in your brain compartment. We often get description of changes in pressure with changes in body position, lifting, coughing, etc.. Have you lost or gained weight to any significant amount in the past year? This is often something that can accompany this picture. There is a lot of information on idiopathic intracranial hypertension in the headache literature, and some decent treatments. There's a basic information page that can get you started HERE.

Good luck to you,
John Claude Krusz
