Our Site Volunteers:
On a regular basis, I get emails
thanking me for the content and support this site offers. With next week being
National Volunteer Week, I want to state for the record that much of the thanks
goes to our volunteer forum and chat hosts:
- Bill2HOST
- DebHOST1
- DonHOST
- ErinHOST
- JaneHOST
- KrisHOST2
- LisaHOST
- LissHOST
- MimiHOST2
- PatHOST
- PaulaHST
- PlumHOST
In order to provide helpful, well researched articles, keep adding links to the subject pages, work on updating our medications references, and do all the other things necessary to keep bringing you the best information possible, it's truly necessary that we have help with the forums and chat room. There are other reasons these folks are important to our site also:
- They bring their own unique experience and insight to us.
- We all benefit from feedback from an array of perspectives.
- These hosts take the time to be familiar with our topic, the content on our site, and information elsewhere. They are very dedicated to all of us.
- Having several hosts means that someone is always available despite differing schedules.
- At any given time, some of us are incapacitated with a headache or Migraine attack. Having all our hosts means that someone is always watching out for us.
- Much, much more . . .
You should know that these folks are truly volunteers. There is no budget to pay them in dollars. They do all they do for us out of dedication and because they truly care about us all.
Although I thank our hosts privately, with National Volunteer Week approaching, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank them publicly, bring their dedication to your attention, and encourage you to take the opportunity to express your thanks as well. Please take a moment to email them or stop by the forums or one of our chats and say hello and thanks to these folks.
If you're interested in becoming a host and want more information, just email me at headaches.guide@about.com.
Other Volunteers:
Volunteers are the
backbone of many nonprofit organizations of all kinds. Volunteers also
contribute countless hours in hospitals, schools, churches, and other places.
Here's some interesting information:
- According to Volunteer Canada, over 6.5 million Canadians volunteer each year.
- The
Points of Light Foundation
reports:
- In 2000, nearly half of adults (44%) or 83.9 million people volunteered their time.
- Their work represents the equivalent of over 9 million full-time employees at a value of $239 billion.
- The average volunteer gave 3.6 hours of time per week.
- The annual hours for volunteering were 15.5 billion.
Especially for our U.S. readers, just think back to the events of September 11, 2001, and the aftermath. Without volunteers, who knows where our country would be right now. Volunteers have worked and even died in their efforts following the terrorist attacks.
So, what's in it for the volunteers?
- The intrinsic reward that comes from having done something worthwhile with your time and having helped others.
- Social interaction with other people sharing similar interests.
- A true feeling of belonging.
- Far more . . .
To ALL Volunteers:
As we head into National Volunteer
Week, I salute you and thank you for all your efforts. You are indeed precious
resources to our communities.
