QUESTION:

I have been suffering from headaches for the past ten years or more. I cannot work outside, when do my head feels like it is in a vice. I am sure to have plenty of water and wear a hat, it doesn’t help. I also get cluster headaches on right side, behind the eye. They come on suddenly. The pain is unbearable at times, and the cluster will go away with ibuprofen. The other type only falling asleep will help. Anything will be helpful, I have tried watching what I eat.
Also my son cannot fly, when he flies he feels like he is going to have an aneurysm. Goes away when he gets off the plane. I have looked up headaches on the internet, but nothing on flying other thank take-off. He has it the whole time.
Thank you,
Ivonne

Dear Ivonne:
You pose a number of interesting questions: heat certainly is a well-known trigger for headaches. Cluster headaches, though always one-sided, don't respond to ibuprofen, or, at least it would be very unusual. Sleep is usually restorative and helps the headache process get better. Food triggers are numerous for migraines.
I'm not sure what your son means by "...feeling like he has an aneurysm..." If he feels a strong pressure in his head, that would not be unusual. I have many flight attendant and aircraft personnel who have headaches while in the air. Again, not uncommon. I wonder if seeing a headache expert would be helpful to you and your son.
