QUESTION:

For the past 12 years I have been getting migraines, but over the past 10 months my headaches have been daily. I live in Wisconsin and have been seeing a wonderful neurologist 1 1/2 hours away for about 3 years, in December he sent me to the Diamond Headache Clinic with no relief as of yet. As far as the pain goes Diamond only prescribes beta blockers, my neurologist prescribes me Esgic plus. I have had very good results from Esgic plus (Fioricet has also worked well). My question is on some days the Esgic plus just does not do it (I also have Migranal with no relief) for the pain, is there something close to that I could ask him for that is stronger that I could use when the Esgic just does not do the trick? I have been off work since December and my headaches are debilitating. Thank you, Candi

REPLY:

Dear Candi:
Hmmm...I seem to recall a study done at the Diamond Headache Clinic by their Co-Director using a medication called Gabitril to control headaches. You might want to ask about that option. You may also be fueling your own headaches by daily Esgic. This is called analgesic rebound headache. You need to become better informed about this possibility.
