QUESTION:

Doctor: My headache began a week ago today. At first I thought I had a mild hang-over having gone to a party the night before. But the headache that began last Saturday is still going strong. It is very strong and I can hardly move. I find myself taking pain killers every couple of hours. The pain is all over but mostly on the right side of my head. Please give some pointers. I have called the doctor today but as always they can not give me an appointment until Monday. I am tempted to go to emergency. Thank you. GDLL

Dear GDLL:
Hopefully, you got care after writing to us. Without more information, your medical history, and an examination, it’s pretty impossible for anyone offer much of an opinion on this question. The one exception is that perhaps you started out with a hang-over, as you thought, but then started experiencing rebound headache from the meds you were taking. Please see:
* Arghhhhh! Rebound Headaches!
You have a headache. Taking medications is one of the logical things to do. There is something to consider before you take that medication though -- the dreaded rebound headaches. They're caused by taking medications too often. Sometimes just taking a drug for two or three consecutive days can cause rebound.
