QUESTION:

I have migraines on the left side only, they started 7 months ago and it is 7days a week, 24 hours and the pain never goes away. None of the medications work and have had ct scans of the brain and sinus which showed nothing. I am on the blood pressure medication Toprol 25 mgs per day, which was changed from Norvasc. My primary care physician is no help now and I don't know what to do or who to see. Even tried alternative, but did not help either. After 7 months, I am worn down from the pain and need help.

REPLY:
It's a shame you weren't referred you to an excellent neurologist or a headache/Migraine specialist months ago.

When the pain of a Migraine continues more than 72 hours with less than a four-hour pain-free period while awake, it is classified by the International Headache Society as Status Migrainous and should be treated as an emergency. You need to call your physician tomorrow. If she doesn’t know how to break this cycle and has no IMMEDIATE advice for you, you should go to the emergency room. Migraines that continue for this long put Migraineurs at increased risk of stroke. Please see:

"Better safe than sorry," could never be more true. More people died from Migrainous Stroke last year than were murdered by handguns. Don't take chances!

Please do call your physician first thing tomorrow morning, and please let me know how you’re doing. After getting medical care, you might also get a lot from talking to others who have been in similar situations. Please join us in our forums for sharing of information and support.
