QUESTION:
Dear Dr. My mother has headaches frequently throughout the day. They come and go and are severe in onset. They last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and are located on the right side of her head. They are located behind her eye, behind her head (behind her ear) and come around under her jaw. Any idea what these could be sourced by? We were thinking they are due to allergies, but she has no relief when taking allergy medicine. She is 85 years old, has had periodic headaches in the past, but nothing this severe or consistent. Would appreciate your input on this. Thanks, Lee. REPLY: Lee, I would sincerely suggest getting Mom to a headache specialist. Your description sounds like a few potential types of headaches. One of these is called chronic paroxysmal hemicrania, but there is no way to be sure without hearing her describe it in detail.
