Review:
This is another young adult book that appeals to grownups, too, and is one of the most original books I've ever hunted down. Coraline, her mother, and her father, live in a new flat that has twenty-one windows and fourteen doors. One door is locked, though, and when opened reveals a brick wall. Later, when Coraline goes back to the door, a corridor appears, leading the way to another flat much like her own, only different. She has an Other Father, and an Other Mother, who have black, shiny button eyes, and are not at all what they seem, and never want to let her go, but want to keep her for always. Caroline must find a way to save her real parents, herself, and the restore the ordinariness of her life. This book is a full of wonderful creepy crawly things. It's like Alice in Wonderland mixed in with a healthy dose of Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. The author's dedication to his daughters states that it was 'started for Holly' (who is fifteen), and 'finished for Maddy' (who is six). When Gaiman asked Holly if she was too old for Coraline, she stated that she didn't think anyone could be too old for Coraline. This is an enigmatic, mesmerizing story about being careful what you wish for and appreciating what you have, suitable for young and old. This book's winning a lot of praise among kids, librarians, and adults, and is justifiably winning awards, too. I love this one!
