On October 3rd, Abi Smith began posting in our forum. She attended our evening chats on October 4th and 5th. Abi was on day five of a Migraine attack, which meant that she was in status migrainous, and needed emergency care. Unfortunately, she didn't seek care, and on October 7th, she suffered seizures and a migrainous stroke. Although the doctors thought she had recovered from the stroke and discharged her a couple of weeks later, when she got her next Migraine, she had another stroke. Abi passed away early on the morning of November 12, 2001. She would have been 22-years-old on December 3.

Many of you expressed a desire to send flowers, send cards to her family, do something. Shortly before she died, Abi wrote a letter to me in her journal. It was sent to me later on. In it she said:

"...Could you please help others understand about migraine, and that getting immediate treatment is important? I will be with you always..."

Since migrainous stroke is one of the issues on which MAGNUM, the National Migraine Association, does a great deal of education, it seems fitting to me that any of us who want to make donations to MAGNUM in Abi's memory. I have made arrangements with MAGNUM for this to begin.

If any of you wish to make donations in Abi's memory, you can do this in several ways:*

  • Phone me at 304-863-0502. You can give me your credit card information to be processed by MAGNUM. (Call me because their office staff is off for the holidays.)
  • Fax the information to them with a special form. Click HERE for the form.
  • Email me at headaches.guide@about.com with info as to the amount of the donation you want to make, your credit card number, expiration date, and phone number.
  • Send a check to:
    MAGNUM

We all came to care a great deal for Abi in the short time we knew her. Here's a poem written in her memory:

“Too Short”

almost 22-years-old
almost, not quite
she visited a few times
then was gone
she needed
but gave more than she asked
then she was gone
she loved and laughed and cried
but then she was gone
was it with a whisper
or with a shout that she left?

* Since MAGNUM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all donations are tax-deductible.
