Is It Migraine? Tension? What?

Beating that Head Pain!

Updated: May 24, 2006

Over 90% of us will experience headache of some kind at some time in our lives. It is estimated that, in the United States, there are 100 million people who are afflicted with a chronic head pain disorder. There are over 32 million Migraineurs alone. There are different kinds of head pain, requiring differing treatments. Proper diagnosis is essential to our overall health and to obtain the best possible treatment for our head pain, whatever type it is.

Former Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, said, "The best prescription is knowledge." The more you learn about your head pain, the more effective you can be as the leader of your healthcare team. Dr. William B. Young of the Jefferson Headache Center, summed it up quite well in our chat room one evening, saying, "An educated patient is a better patient. I'd far rather have a treatment partner than a dishrag." If your doctor resists or resents questions and does not react well to your being an active member of your healthcare team, talk to him or her about it. If that doesn't resolve the issue, it may be Time for a New Doctor.

Below, is a table summarizing the symptoms of headaches and some links to more information. Please keep in mind the phrase, "Your mileage may vary" (YMMV). Not all headache sufferers will experience the same symptoms or react the same way to the various treatment methods and medications. Keep a headache diary, work with your doctor to diagnose your head pain and develop your treatment plan, and let's BEAT THOSE HEADACHES. Support can be crucial. Talking with others who truly understand is invaluable. Join us in our forums to talk to others in similar situations.
