Ask the Clinician

Question: ...neuro thinks Migraine increase is because of the Berber carpet installed...

Answer:

Dear Robyn,
Even without allergies, Migraineurs can suffer from Migraines triggered by chemical odors. It's possible that the carpet was manufactured with dyes or other chemicals, and you're reacting to them. You don't say how it was installed, but if it was installed with glue, the glue could also be a problem. Have you tried having the carpet steam cleaned? Have you gone on vacation or spent other periods of time away from home? If so, how were your Migraines while away from home?
Some things to consider,
Teri Robert

Dear Robyn:
In all fairness to your carpet, which I assume is fairly expensive, I would agree with Dr Robert's advice, namely, that you carefully record your migraine in the presence and in the absence of being exposed to the carpet itself. I can understand why your doctor suggested removal of the carpet as the time-frame is similar to your increased headaches. In fact, I have had patients who had headaches set off by the formaldehyde (presumed culprit) which is found in the underpads of carpets. I have heard of switching this out for a foam-based underpad with some good results. Some folks are exquisitely sensitive to many chemical substances. these, of course, may be implicated in headache upsurges.
Good luck to you,
John Claude Krusz
