Ask the Clinician

Question: I know my headaches are due to my periods and when I ovulate. My GYN doesn't...

Answer:

Dear Anne,
A partial hysterectomy is not the answer to menstrual or ovulatory Migraines. For some women, a hysterectomy actually makes their Migraines worse. You don't mention what medication you take, but there's a recent study on using Frova (frovatriptan) as a preventive for menstrual Migraine. Here's some information:

    Frova® for Menstrually Associated Migraine
Two studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society showed that Frova (frovatriptan) is effective as a preventive medication for menstrually Associated Migraine. Frova does not seem to induce rebound headaches. It's efficacy is not affected by the use of oral contraceptives.

You may find that you need to see a neurologist of Migraine specialist. They have more training and experience in treating Migraine, of course. If you need a specialist in your area, please check the link at the bottom of this page for our directory.
