Ask the Clinician

Question: Migraines...mini strokes...Ischemic Disease...related to Migraines?

Answer:

Dear Sheila:

Your questions are quite important but, frankly, most do not have definite answers. Many people with migraines have non-specific changes in their MRI scans OR may have the changes due to high cholesterol, lipids, sugar, or prior traumatic brain injury, and not necessarily related to the headaches. Calling these items "mini-strokes" causes a lot of fear and anxiety and I'm not sure it fosters any better care issues. Perhaps consultation with a local headache expert might be a better option for your daily headaches.

Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
