Ask the Clinician

Question: Is it safe to take Midrin and Imitrex in the same 24-hour period?

Answer:

Dear Ann,

The time from exposure to a food trigger can vary a great deal from Migraineur to Migraineur. Also, for an individual Migraineur, it can vary from food to food, ranging from minutes up to 48 hours.

Now, about the Imitrex situation. Is is fair to assume this is a limitation imposed by your insurance company? Have you called them about the limitation and challenged it? Some insurance companies will waive it with a letter from your doctor. Even when they don't, there are ways to fight the issue. See: UNACCEPTABLE Triptan Limitations.

I don't see anything in the prescribing information for Imitrex or Midrin that would prevent your using them both in the same 24-hour period, but you really do need to check with your own doctor before doing so.

Best of luck,
Teri Robert
