Atenolol for Migraines?

Ask the Clinician

Question: Atenolol for Migraines?

Answer:

Atenolol is a beta blocker, a class of medications originally intended for hypertension. Beta blockers are also often prescribed off-label for Migraine prevention. That means that additional clinical trials to prove their effectiveness for Migraine prevention weren't presented to the FDA for the FDA to approve these medications for Migraine prevention, but they're still prescribed because they've been found to be effective. This is a very common practice, not only for Migraine prevention, but in other areas of medicine as well.
Good luck,
Teri Robert
