Ask the Clinician

Question: Use of Nerutontin, Zonegran for Migraine prevention?

Answer:

Dear Sue:
Actually, referring to this category of medication as anti-seizure drugs is inaccurate. The preferred term, at least in my practice, is neuronal stabilizing agents. Neurontin is prescribed 95% of the time for issues other than seizures, its original reason for being on the the market. Probably 40-50% of Zonegran prescriptions are not for seizures, either. The only caution with Zonegran is that I do not start it at the usual recommended dose that would be used for seizures (ie, 100mg). I start it at one capsule every 4th night. But that should be discussed with your current headache doctor. By the way, he is right about worrying for you developing analgesic-rebound headaches. For peri-menopausal women, there is also the consideration for estrogen/ progesterone supplementation. Whole nuther story.
Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
