Ask the Clinician

Question: ...heard of some success curing migraines with surgery for Chiari malformation?

Answer:

Dear 55-year-old:
Arnold Chiari type surgery presumes that a person has that diagnosis. I have seen at least 6 people who have had this procedure for migraines, and all but one had no relief or a worsening of their migraines. The sixth had a very very mild reduction. The people who do the surgery promote it as a "cure," but I have my serious doubts.
Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
