Ask the Clinician

Question: ...head injury...loss of cfs...MERRF disease...connections?

Answer:

Dear Sheryl:
Your question has many elements: certainly, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) itself can be the genesis of lifelong headaches. Spinal fluid loss can be a perpetuating factor in headaches from a TBI. How you came to a diagnosis of cluster headaches is not clear to me. I suspect your headaches always occured in the same distribution. MERRF is another (rare) disorder linked to migraine-like headaches. I honestly do not know what prognostic features for MERRF are. If you are not seeing a headache specialist, it might be worth the time and effort to seek one out in your area.
Good luck,
John Claude Krusz
