Question: Does Topamax work? Can it be taken with my abortive medications when needed?...
Answer:
Dear Rita,
There have been many studies on Topamax for Migraine prevention. For some patients, it's an excellent preventive. The clinical trials suggest a slow taper up to the dosage that works for the patient. Here's some information about tapering Topamax:
- Topamax for Prevention: Proper Dosage and Taper
Topamax (topiramate), a medication originally developed for seizure control, has been prescribed for several years now for prevention of cluster headaches and Migraine attacks. Here's important information about how to best use this medication.
As for Migraines around your cycle, here's an article with some information:
- Frova for Menstrually Associated Migraine
Two studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society showed that Frova (frovatriptan) is effective as a preventive medication for menstrually Associated Migraine. Frova does not seem to induce rebound headaches. It's efficacy is not affected by the use of oral contraceptives.
Good luck,
Teri Robert
Dear Rita:
I am struck by your statement that you try to deny your migraines! Why? You obviously have them and perimenstrual migraines as well. You should speak to your doctor about the dosing of Topamax. Please keep in mind that Topamax may have an approval for migraine prophylaxis in 2004; however, the suggested dosing is not known at this time. If you can, I'd suggest seeing a headache specialist in your area. I agree with Dr. Robert about the Fioricet possibly being a culprit in promoting headaches over time.
